The Communication Faculty of Vilnius University is organizing an international academic conference, “Communication and information sciences in network society: experience and insights: III” on the 9th –10th of June, 2016. The aim of this conference is to present and discuss current problems in communication and information research as well as to build upon the dialogue on the issues within this field of science.

The topics to be presented should prove to be relevant to communication and information scientists, lecturers and students. Therefore, the conference organizers invite you to choose from the list of predetermined topics that fit your field of research.
Networking has become an integral part of our daily life, increasingly involving various aspects of human life, modifying not only the communication habits, but also the traditional social structure, of organizations and institutions. The networking age certainly provides new opportunities for people, for the efficiency of organizations and institutions, and finally for the development of communication and information science. However, new opportunities raise certain challenges. What kinds of problems does the network society face? What problems of communication and information science are most relevant today?

The organizers of the conference are calling for presentations on the following topics based on current issues in the field of communication and information science.

CULTURE AND SCIENCE COMMUNICATION AND INFORMATION SERVICES

  • Construction (re-construction) of memory and identities in the social network.
  • Documentary heritage and documentary resources: formation, access, communication and dissemination.
  • Information services and change in their content: assessment of the quality and impact of information services and institutions; the influence of censorship and the abundance of technologies and information in society on reading and media and information literacy; information services in various fields and schools of culture and science.
  • Cultural communication and libraries: the participatory library, the influence of social networks on cultural communication, the development and digital repatriation of library collections, the role of librarians in the preparation of information on local history, science communication (popularization).
  • Heritage communication between social reality and political order.
  • The social and economic role of heritage industries.

JOURNALISM AND THE MASS MEDIA

  • Journalism’s place in an information society: journalism studies in the digital age, change in the professional skills of journalists, variety and reliability of information sources, the specifics of preparation and presentation of texts in Internet media, the new video journalism, journalism and editorial ethics, online comments.
  • Mass media markets, organizations and digital transformation: media market trends, media organization changes in conditions of convergence, transparency of media ownership, the influence of social media on the mass media business.
  • Interaction of mass media and politics: political parallelism in mass media systems, political communication, political journalism and historical know-how, the public broadcaster and politics, propaganda in the media and democracy.

MEDIA AND INNOVATIONS

  • Are modern cultural media still hot?
  • Media practices of everyday life.
  • Participation in the creation of media content.
  • E-reading and e-publishing.
  • Practical exploitation opportunities for social media.
  • Documentary resources and access to documents in memory institutions.

ORGANIZATIONAL COMMUNICATION

  • Sustainability of an organization: social responsibility, reputation and communication; sustainable development; cooperation between business and non-governmental organizations; organizations’ environmental communication; organizations’ social responsibility communication; an organization’s values and corporate communication.
  • Reputation and crisis management problem research: an organization’s image and reputation, research on an organization’s identity, the application of social media in crisis management, risk communication, the startup ecosystem and communication, research on a country’s image, intercultural communication barriers and conflict resolution, public diplomacy and international communication.
  • Information and knowledge management research: research on evaluation of informational activities, research on an organization’s culture, leadership, a learning organization, intercultural communication research.
  • Application of information technology in communication: big data and business analytics, cloud technology in business, information security problems, application of information technology in an organization’s corporate communication, the role of social media in an organization’s integrated communication.
  • Application of new technologies for teaching in communication studies: Web 2.0 training, the use of technologies, combined training, personalized training.
  • Knowledge and innovation management: knowledge management in an organization, methods and models for assessing knowledge management, knowledge management in social media, intellectual capital and innovations, organizational learning and innovations

Practitioners within the field will also be invited to take part in the relevant discussions.

Presentations will be read in Lithuanian and in English. The estimated duration of presentations is 20 minutes, with 5 minutes for questions.

The organizers of the conference have kindly informed that you will be able to publish an article based on your presentation in one of the academic journals of Vilnius University: “Informacijos mokslai”, “Knygotyra”, and “Žurnalistikos tyrimai /Journalism Research”.

  • 1 September 2015 – 10 February 2016: Submission of proposals for papers.
  • Until 29 February 2016: Evaluation and selection of papers.
  • Until 9 April 2016: Registration of speakers.
  • Until 29 May 2016: Registration of participants.
  • May 2016: announcement of conference programme.
